Pass the PMP exam in 2024

Passing the Project Management Professional (PMP®) exam demands a comprehensive understanding of a wide array of project management principles. The nearly four-hour test challenges candidates with extensive content from substantial textbooks and study materials, presenting a formidable challenge even for experienced project professionals.

In January 2021, significant revisions were made to the PMP® exam to better reflect contemporary practices in project management. These changes emphasize the importance of project outcomes and the central role of the project manager in effectively leading teams. The updated exam covers a broad spectrum of project delivery methodologies, including predictive, hybrid, and agile approaches, and places greater emphasis on people management skills while somewhat decreasing focus on traditional waterfall processes.

The revised format necessitates a strategic preparation approach, especially considering how much outdated material I’ve come across that is being re-packaged as directly relevant to the current exam.

To ensure a focused and efficient study plan, it is critical to select resources that align with the current PMP® exam content.

Here’s a quick list of preparation materials I found to be most effective in helping me acquire the necessary knowledge to pass the exam:

  1. Project Management Process Group and Knowledge Area Mapping Game
    • This interactive tool uses gameplay to facilitate a clear understanding of Project Management process groups and knowledge areas. It’s an efficient way to solidify your grasp of the process side of the exam, helping you understand how various elements fit together and how projects progress.
  2. David McLachlan’s YouTube Videos
    • These expert-led tutorials provide clear, concise, and practical insights into project management topics, serving as an excellent supplement to traditional study methods. David’s encouraging walkthrough approach not only helps in understanding the material but also in demonstrating effective exam strategies, such as analyzing questions and strategically eliminating incorrect answers.
  3. PMI Study Hall™ ESSENTIALS App
    • This application offers a wide array of practice questions that closely mimic the actual PMP® exam format. Accompanied by detailed rationales and solutions, these questions help candidates refine their understanding and enhance their test-taking skills. While the app offers numerous resources and tools, for those focused on quickly gaining essential knowledge, I recommend concentrating on the quizzes. It’s important to note that some questions in the app are particularly difficult, whereas the actual PMP® exam tends to offer a more balanced evaluation of core Project Management knowledge.
  4. Online Forums (Reddit, Discord, etc.)
    • Engaging with PMP-focused groups on these social platforms can provide invaluable insights, aiding in understanding what contributes to exam success and helping to alleviate pre-exam anxiety.

Leveraging the right resources will equip you with the skills and confidence to excel on the PMP® exam.

Please share your thoughts and any other helpful PMP® exam resources in the comments!

P.S. The PMI recently shared its new AI PMP exam Simulator that's free for ChatGPT Plus subscribers. I haven't had a chance to really test it out, so please let me know if it's worth adding to the list!
